Als Dancefloor-Hallen noch Discos hießen, als kitschig glimmende Spiegelkugeln über Tanzparketts rotierten, als Dates am Wochenende noch ein romantisches Saturday Night Fever auslösten, da schoss sie empor ins Universum ewigen Pop-Ruhms. Es war Ende der Siebziger... “I knew, this would be a hit”. GLORIA GAYNOR war so überzeugt von der Nummer, dass sie ins ultra-hippe Studio 54 in New York marschierte und dem DJ eine Test-Pressung auf den Plattenteller hievte. Der Song war nur als B-side geplant. Das Echo ist Legende, der Rest der Story Popgeschichte. Die Tanzvölker aller Nation vereinten sich im Mitsingen und Mitstampfen zur großen Hymne der Disco-Musik: „I WILL SURVIVE“, 1978 aufgenommen, ein Jahr später mit dem Grammy für die beste Disco-Single ausgezeichnet, war mehr als ein Hit. Sein Titel wurde für die folgenden Jahrzehnte zum Lebens-Credo der Sängerin GLORIA GAYNOR.
Die Krönung zur Queen of Disco hat die charismatische, stil- und modebewusste Performerin schon Jahre vorher erlebt, als ihre groovenden Tanztitel „HONEY BEE“, „NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE“ and „REACH OUT I’LL BE THERE“ die Charts stürmten. Weitere Hits in den achtziger Jahren, wie das betörende „I AM WHAT I AM“, waren Etappen ihrer künstlerischen und persönlichen Entwicklung.

GLORIA GAYNOR. Who could forget her? Though disco’s heyday came, went and has come full circle in a rush of retro lust for the genre and All Things ‘70’s, pop culture never cold say goodbye to the former crowned Queen of Disco (officially coronated in 1975 before thousands of revelers in the Big Apple). Unlike disco-inspired whims such as mile-high platform shoes, bell- bottom hip-huggers and polyester whatever, America’s love affair with GAYNOR has remained as steadfast and true as her Anthem for the Ages, “I WILL SURVIVE”.
She was the first-and only-artist to receive a Grammy for “Best Disco Recording”, the category was subsequently removed after her win but has been reincarnated in various dance-related divisions. GAYNOR was also the first to record an album especially for clubs, “NEVER CAN SAY GOODBYE”, and the first to do a mega-extended dance medley party mix, releasing 12” dance singles like “MOST OF ALL” and “ANYBODY WANNA PARTY” that are now high-end collectors items.
The disco ball has risen again and shines on GAYNOR, who has continued to flourish in the limelight despite disco’s apparent fade-out in the early ‘80s when it was usurped by Euro-dance. Her two-CD set and the first in the U.S. since 1987 (though she’s released four in Europe in the last decade), “I WILL SURVIVE: THE GLORIA GAYNOR ANTHOLOGY” (Polydor Records), also will be light-kissed by that magical orb when it’s released in April, unleashed on radio and embraced in clubs.
